Quality used cars. It all started in 1968 when Ben Mulder leased the corner station in Orange City from John Ter Horst. Ben, his wife Jonna and their four small children moved from nearby Rock Valley and Mulder Oil Company was born. In those days, small businesses didn’t have grandiose mission statements. Ben’s philosophy was simple —do your best, work hard and treat customers the way you’d like to be treated. The business grew.
Jonna and daughter Kim did the books while Ben and sons Brett, BJ and Scott took care of things at the station. Ben was able to purchase the station in the 70’s and two more service stalls were added. Youngest son Scott joined the business full-time after graduating from Northwestern College in 1987. In addition to Ben’s family and some excellent full-time employees, over the years, hundreds of students from MOC Floyd Valley, Unity Christian, Spalding Catholic and Northwestern College have found part-time employment at Mulder Oil.
In 1997, son Scott and his wife Jill purchased the Pronto Convenience store in Orange City. Numerous improvements were made, including the addition of an automated car wash. The store, just a half a block south of the full-service station, was renamed the Dutch Mart.
By 2001, after 31 years of service to his customers and his community, Ben was ready to retire. Scott Mulder purchased his father’s business.
While searching for dependable used cars for his children to drive in high and college, Scott found a new niche for the business and in 2008, Mulder Auto was established. Selling quality used cars in addition their already successful service and repair business has grown into one of the most trusted used auto dealers in NW Iowa .
